Sound Equipment Installation at The John Curwen Primary School, Wakefield
We were recently contracted by The John Curwen Primary School in Heckmondwike, near Wakefield, to design and install a new sound equipment installation. Their existing 100-volt line audio system was no longer capable of providing adequate sound levels or speech intelligibility, especially during class assemblies and award ceremonies. Our goal was to provide a modern solution that would significantly enhance audio clarity and impact for all school events.
System Design and Components
To meet the school’s needs, we chose to install four Electrovoice ZX1 speakers. These speakers, featuring an 8″ driver and horn, were selected for their clarity and coverage. Two speakers were positioned on the left and right sides of the stage, while the other two were installed halfway down the hall to act as infill sound. To enhance the low-frequency response during stage performances, we also installed two ZX1 12″ bass speakers discreetly under the stage area.
Central Control and Audio Processing
The heart of the new system is housed within a custom-built Swan Mixer Flightcase. Inside, we installed an Allen & Heath ZED 18 PA mixer, offering 18 microphone channels for flexible input options. For wireless capabilities, we included four Audio Technica Handheld Radio Mic Systems and an Audio Technica Lapel Radio Mic System. A DBX 2-way crossover was incorporated to optimize the frequency distribution to the speakers and subwoofers, ensuring a balanced and clear sound. Finally, a QSC GX3 and a QSC GX5 professional stereo amplifier were selected to power the main sound system, providing reliable and high-quality amplification.
Stage Sound Capture
To capture speech from performances and children on stage during school productions, we installed two Audio Technica AT875 shotgun microphones. These microphones were mounted on small ceiling brackets over the front of the stage, providing focused and clear audio pickup. This setup ensures that every word is heard clearly by the audience.
Audio Equipment Installs Wakefield
As part of the comprehensive sound system installation, we’ve integrated four Apart Audio ceiling speakers within the dining area. These speakers feature an 8″ driver, discreetly mounted within the existing suspended ceiling tiles. This strategic placement ensures optimal sound distribution throughout the space.
To power and control these speakers, we’ve included a rack-mounted TOA 100-volt line mixer amplifier. This professional-grade amplifier allows for precise audio adjustments, ensuring the sound quality is tailored to the specific needs of the environment.
This integrated audio solution is designed to seamlessly accommodate overflow seating from the main hall, particularly during stage performances. When the hall requires expanded capacity, the dining area transforms into an extension of the performance space. The Apart Audio speakers and TOA amplifier work in tandem to deliver clear, consistent audio coverage throughout both areas, ensuring an immersive and enjoyable experience for all attendees. This ensures that audio quality isn’t compromised when the dining area is utilized for additional seating.
